| The Dance portion of
the Kiwanis Festival of the Performing Arts is intended as a family
event, where amateur dancers demonstrate a respect for all forms of
dance and all levels of ability. Please read the General Rules that
apply to all disciplines.
Also, please observe the following rules that apply specifically to
Dance. |

COMPETITION ETIQUETTE
|
Dancers, teachers,
parents and audience members must respect others and follow these
rules of etiquette: |
| 1. |
While in the auditorium, please remain seated
during performances. |
| 2. |
No one is allowed in
the adjudication or tabulation areas during competition sessions.
Dance teachers may approach the adjudicator's secretary during scheduled
breaks. |
| 3. |
Cell phones and pagers
must be turned off when in the competition area.
|
| 4. |
Food and drinks are not
allowed in the competition area, hallways or dressing rooms. They
may be consumed in the cafeteria. |
| 5. |
Dance studios are responsible for keeping the areas assigned as dressing rooms clean. Please recycle cans and plastic in the blue bins located in the hallways. |
| 6. |
Dancers must wear a cover-up in the hallways and auditorium, when not on stage. |
| 7. |
Flash photography or videotaping is not allowed during performances. Nor is coaching. |
| 8. |
Above all, dancers,
teachers and parents must conduct themselves with decorum and
demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout the dance competition.

STAGE REGULATIONS
|
| 9. |
Routines must be
appropriate for family enjoyment. Mature themes, evocative costumes
and coarse language are not acceptable. |
| 10. |
Props are allowed, if
they are essential to the routine. No weapons, fire, fireworks or
live animals are permitted at the competition. Performers must
remove props and clean any debris from the stage immediately after
their performances. |
| 11. |
Only dancers and
teachers are allowed backstage. |
| 12. |
Performers who dance in
bare feet must keep their shoes on until they reach the wings of the
stage. |
| 13. |
Dancing is a risk
sport. Competitors who enter this competition will not hold the
Kiwanis Club, its staff, volunteers or venues responsible for
injuries. |
| 14. |
Please comply with the
following time limits:
- Solos, duets and trios - 3 minute maximum
- Groups - 4 minute maximum
- Production Numbers - 7 minute maximum

ELIGIBILITY RULES
|
| 15. |
NOVICE dancers
have not competed in solo, duet or trio classes before (although
they may have competed in groups). Novice groups must comprise 75%
novice dancers. Please write NOV on the entry form in the
space provided for your level. |
| 16. |
RECREATIONAL
dancers have three hours or less per week of dance instruction or practice in any genre. They have already
competed at the novice level, but never at the competitive level.
Recreational groups must comprise 75% recreational dancers. Please
write REC on the entry form in the space provided for your
level. |
| 17. |
COMPETITIVE
classes are intended for experienced dancers who have more than
three hours per week of dance instruction or practice in any genre. They have already competed at novice and
recreational levels. Please write COMP on the entry form in
the space for your level. |
| 18. |
To determine average
age for duets, trios and groups add the ages of the dancers,
then divide by the number of dancers. When the average is less than
a whole number, round down to the lower age. |
| 19. |
It is not necessary to
provide proof of age with the entry form; however, identification
should be available at the competition. |

MUSIC |
| 20. |
Each entrant must
provide music on a CD or a new, high-quality cassette, cued to the
beginning of the piece. Use separate cassettes for each selection of
music. |
| 21. |
Please include your
name, class number, music title, track number and studio name on the cassette or
CD. We recommend bringing a back-up copy. |
| 22. |
Teachers are
responsible for supplying music to the sound engineer, who will
monitor levels during performances. Please pick up your music after
each performance. |

AWARDS AND PLACEMENTS
|
| 23. |
The adjudicator's
decisions are final. |
| 24. |
Dancers, teachers and
parents are not allowed to discuss scoring or results with the
adjudicator or tabulator before, during or after the competition.
|
| 25. |
In all genres of dance,
students who wish to perform, but not compete for marks or
placements, must inform the adjudicator's secretary before the
session begins. |
| 26. |
Adjudications, ribbons,
awards and medals will be given periodically throughout the
competition, and at the completion of each evening session. At the
same time, adjudications taped during dances will be presented to
performers. |
| 27. |
In order to receive
prizes, these minimum marks are required:
- First Class with Distinction 90%
- First Prize 80%
- Second and Third Prize 75%

FEES include DVD of dance with commentary |
| 28. |
The entry fee for solo
dancers is $40.
Fees for duets is $45 and for trios is $60.
Fees or groups of four or more is $15 per dancer.
And for production numbers, the fee is $10 per dancer.
