ELIGIBILITY |
| 3. |
All competitions are
intended for amateurs, not professionals, as defined below. |
| 4. |
A professional is any
person whose principal means of livelihood is obtained from
performance in a particular discipline.
A person may be a professional in one discipline, for instance acting, but may still compete as an amateur in another discipline, such as music. Participants who only receive occasional remuneration for musical, theatrical or dance services are considered amateur and may compete. |
| 5. |
In all classes in which
an age limit is specified, competitors must be of the stated age as
of December 31, 2009. Please include the age in the space provided on
the entry form. |
| 6. |
Duets, trios and ensembles are asked to average their ages and round down to the nearest age class. |
| 7. |
Performers in choirs, choral societies, orchestras or bands must be bona fide members of their respective organizations. |
| 8. |
Conductors may be either professional or amateur, and may conduct any number of organizations in the same class, but must not sing with their choir or play with their orchestra or band. Jazz ensembles are exceptions to this rule. |
| 9. |
Students studying with
an adjudicator during the current Festival year, September 1/09 to
June 30/10, may not compete in solo classes adjudicated by their
teacher. |

TEST PIECES |
| 10. |
Unless otherwise
indicated, performers must provide a purchased (not photocopied) version of their music or text
for the adjudicator. If they forget to bring their music or text, they will receive adjudication but no marks or placements. Competitors are asked to deliver their selection to the adjudicator's secretary immediately prior to the competition and to retrieve it immediately afterwards.
|
| 11. |
Please include measure numbers at the beginning of each line of your score. |
| 12. |
Test pieces for solo
competitions must be memorized, unless otherwise stated.
|
| 13. |
RCM refers to the Royal
Conservatory of Music (Toronto); CC refers to Conservatory Canada
(London). All intermediate and senior competitors (grade 7 and higher) must select from current RCM or CC syllabi, using the syllabus requirements for the number of movements required. |
| 14. |
Unless otherwise
indicated, test pieces must be performed in the prescribed key. In
choral, junior vocal and musical theatre classes, transpositions are allowed one tone
or semitone up or down. |
| 15. |
Competitors must
perform at their current level of study or higher (but not lower).
|
| 16. |
Repeats in instrumental
solos and duets are not to be played, but a da capo must be
observed. Unless otherwise directed, take the second ending.
|
| 17. |
Time limit is seven
minutes for open classes, unless otherwise specified in the Syllabus.
|
| 18. |
With the exception of trophy finals or Provincial qualifying classes, competition selections may only only be performed once. |

PROGRAM PROCEDURES
|
| 23. |
Please note any potential conflicts when submitting your entries. We will make every effort to accommodate performers who have scheduling challenges. At the same time, we reserve the right to shift a student from a class in which he or she is the sole participant to an approrpiate class with more competitors. |
| 24. |
A scheduling notification is mailed to every teacher who has entries into the Festival. It is the teacher's responsibility to advise students of times, dates and places for their classes and to inform the Festival immediately if there are conflicts. Once the program is published classes will not be changed. |
| 25. |
Performers must provide their own accompanists. For a list of accompanists, please contact the Festival office at kmusicfest@golden.net or call (519) 273-3011. Taped accompaniment is allowed for instrumental jazz solos, recorders and show choirs. |
| 26. |
No practicing will be allowed, before or after classes, on pianos used in the competition. However, rehearsal time may be arranged for Pipe Organ competitors. |
| 27. |
A chord may be given on the piano at the commencement of each piece of unaccompanied music. |

AWARDS AND PRIZES
|
| 28. |
In order to preserve a
high standard of performance in all classes, an award winner must
achieve the following minimum marks: first prize 80%, second and
third prize 75%. Unless these marks are obtained, prizes may be
withheld, regardless of the number of competitors. To advance to Finals in piano, speech & drama or vocal, performers must achieve at least 83% in qualifying classes.
|
| 29. |
To be considered for a major award, such as a Kiwanis Award of Excellence, participants are strongly advised to enter at least three solo classes in the same discipline.
|
| 30. |
Trophies and awards are presented at the discretion of the adjudicators and the Committee, and may be transferred from one discipline to another if the Committee so chooses.
Trophies are the
property of the Festival and are on loan to winners for 10 months. Trophy winners will receive a plaque to keep, but must return the trophy to the Festival two months prior to the next Festival. Call (519)
273-3011 for details. |
| 31. |
Adjudicator's reports
will be given to all performers at the close of each competition.
