STRATFORD CAPTURES TOP AWARDS

AT 2009 PROVINCIALS

Thirty-two top soloists representing the Kiwanis Festival of the Performing Arts in Voice, Music Theatre, Piano, Speech Arts, Strings and Guitar returned from the Provincial Finals of the Ontario Music Festival Association in Peterborough last week with plenty of hardware.  Competing against the top finishers in 38 Music Festivals throughout the Province, Stratford’s team earned 7 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze and 7 Honourable Mention awards.  This earned the Stratford team a fourth place finish after teams from Toronto, Ottawa and London.

Seaforth’s Janelle Murray won gold in Grade 10 Voice and a second gold in the Senior Music Theatre ‘singoff’.  Karine White from London earned a silver medal in Grade 10 Voice.

"It is a rare occasion when anyone wins a double gold at the Provincials,” said Michele Boniface, Director of Competitions of Stratford’s Kiwanis Festival.  “This is an incredible achievement for Janelle.”

The local Speech and Drama team was exceptionally strong.  Gold medal winners included Karine White in the 19 and over class, Kandi Prosser of Baden (17 to 18 years), and Kate Petker of Stratford (15 to 16 years).  Second place silver medals were earned by Stratford’s Laura Darby (15 to 16 years) and Auburn’s Kelsey Falconer (12 to 14 years).  Jackie Todd of Stratford took home the bronze medal in the 17 to 18 year class.

String competitors also made an excellent showing.   All three area harpists who qualified for the Provincial competition were top finishers in Peterborough.   Emily Beard from Wingham won the gold medal in Grade 9 Harp.  Sisters Rachel and Rebekka Kuschmierz from Alma earned gold and ‘honourable mention’ respectively.  The Beckett School Quartet from Wellesley took home the silver medal in their category.  Stratford’s Daniel Ramjattan earned a silver medal in the Grade 8 guitar competition.

The St. Marys Children’s Choirs, which have dominated their classes in Provincial and National choral competitions throughout most of their twenty-eight year history, continued their winning ways.  The St. Marys Children’s’ Choir, Brio Division, conducted by Marianne Kelly, and its Festival Youth Singers, conducted by Richard Sumstad, both earned the top prize in their respective classes in the Ontario Music Festival Competition.  The St. Marys Presto Choir conduced by Judith Bean placed second in the youth 16 and under category.

The recording of the St. Marys Children's Choir, Brio Division, was submitted to the National Music Festival where it won the top prize.

In the Provincial Finals of the Bands competition, The Stratford Concert Band, directed by Nigel Evans, won first place in the Community Concert Band class with a ‘gold medal’ performance.
